The Hough Papers reflect the brief tenure (July 1, 1919, to October 1, 1920) of an individual who had had no previous pertinent experience for the position of a university president, who apparently had been elected out of desperation as a compromise candidate, and who was absent from his office during most of his presidency because of preaching activities, travel, and illness. Hough was evidently an excellent preacher of sermons (in the U.S. and abroad), a competent writer of essays and religious works, and an accomplished teacher and dean in theological seminaries, but he was miscast as a university president.
